There's something truly special about lighting a fresh candle, isn't there? That first flicker of the flame, the way the scent starts to drift through the room, and the instant sense of calm it brings to your space. At Little Lite Candle, we believe that a candle is more than just a home accessory; it’s an experience. Whether you’ve treated yourself to one of our luxury scented candles or you've received one as a handmade candle gift, you want that cozy feeling to last as long as possible.
Because we pour so much love and care into every single jar, we want to make sure you get the absolute best out of them. Handcrafted candles are a bit like a favorite houseplant, with a little bit of the right attention, they’ll thrive and bring you joy for a long, long time. In this guide, we’re going to walk you through some of our favorite candle care tips so you can enjoy every last drop of your natural wax candles.
The Magic in the Pour
Before we dive into the tips, let’s chat a little bit about what makes our candles different. If you’ve ever wondered why our handcrafted candles smell so good or burn so cleanly, it’s all in the ingredients and the process. We use a signature blend of soy wax and premium white beeswax.
Why white beeswax? Well, traditional yellow beeswax can give the wax a golden hue that doesn't always fit the vibe we’re going for. By using white beeswax, we keep the wax looking clean and modern while benefiting from its amazing properties. It helps create a clean, long-lasting burn that really helps our best smelling candles throw their fragrance beautifully.

The magic? It's in the pour: watching the wax flow from the pitcher into each jar by hand. Every single one of our artisanal candles is made in small batches in Peru, Indiana. Whether it’s something from our Foundations Collection, the elegant Exalted Series, or our seasonal Seasons of Grace line, we’re right there, making sure every wick is centered and every pour is perfect.
The Secret to the Very First Burn
If you only remember one tip from this whole post, let it be this one: the first burn is everything!
Think of wax as having a "memory." When you light your soy candles handmade by us for the first time, you need to let it burn long enough for the melted wax to reach all the way to the edges of the jar. This is called creating a "full melt pool."
If you blow out the candle before the wax reaches the edges, it will start to form a "memory ring." The next time you light it, the wax will likely only melt as far as it did the first time. This leads to what we call "tunneling": where the candle burns straight down the middle, leaving a wall of wasted wax around the sides. To keep your aesthetic home fragrance looking and performing its best, give it about 2 to 3 hours for that first burn. You'll thank us later!
Why You Must Trim Your Wick
We know, we know: you just want to light the candle and get to the good part! but taking five seconds to trim your wick is the easiest way to make your small batch candles last longer.
Before every single light, you should trim your wick to about 1/4 inch. If the wick is too long, the flame becomes too large and starts to flicker or produce "soot" (that black smoke). A long wick also makes the candle burn through the wax much faster than it needs to. A nice, short wick ensures a steady, controlled flame that sips the wax slowly, giving you more hours of fragrance.

If you see a little "mushroom" shape forming on the top of your wick after a burn, that’s just a bit of carbon buildup. Just snip it off before you light it again! Using a dedicated wick trimmer makes this super easy, especially as the candle gets lower in the jar.
The 4-Hour Rule
When you find a scent you love: like our Peach Mango from the Foundations Collection: it’s tempting to leave it burning all day long. However, we recommend burning your candles in sessions of 3 to 4 hours at a time.
Burning a candle for too long can cause the entire jar of wax to get too hot. When the wax gets too liquidy, the fragrance oils can start to burn off too quickly, and the wick might even start to lean or drift. By limiting your burn time, you preserve the integrity of the wax and the scent, making sure your eco friendly candles stay high-quality until the very end.
Stay Away from the Breeze
Drafts are the hidden enemy of a good candle burn. If you place your candle near an open window, a fan, or an air conditioning vent, the moving air will cause the flame to dance around.
A flickering flame is an inefficient flame. It causes uneven heating, which leads to: you guessed it: more tunneling or an uneven surface. Plus, it can cause those black soot marks on the side of your pretty glass jars. To keep your artisanal candles burning straight and true, find a nice, stable spot away from moving air.
Tools of the Trade: Snuffers and Trimmers
While you can certainly get by with a pair of scissors and a steady breath, using the right tools makes the experience so much more enjoyable.
Wick Trimmers: These are designed with a little "catcher" to hold the snipped bit of wick so it doesn't fall into your clean wax.
Candle Snuffers: Instead of blowing out your candle (which can send sparks flying or cause a cloud of smoke that masks your lovely scent), a snuffer gently cuts off the oxygen. It’s the most "pro" way to end your candle session.
Using these tools doesn't just make you look like a candle expert: it actually helps keep the wax pool clean of debris, which is essential for a safe and beautiful burn.
Proper Storage for Your Collection
If you’re like us, you probably have a little "candle library" with different scents for different moods. To keep your handmade candle gifts fresh, it’s important to store them correctly.
Keep your candles in a cool, dry, and dark place. Direct sunlight can cause the natural oils in our soy and beeswax blend to fade or even discolor the wax. Also, always keep the lid on when you're not using it! This keeps dust out of the wax and helps "lock in" the fragrance so it’s just as strong the next time you open it.
A Little Love Goes a Long Way
Caring for your candles is really just about respecting the craftsmanship that went into making them. Every time you trim a wick or wait for that full melt pool, you're ensuring that the hard work we put into the pour at Little Lite Candle translates into hours of warmth and comfort in your home.
We take so much pride in being a veteran-owned, American-made business, and nothing makes us happier than knowing our candles are part of your daily rituals. Whether you're unwinding after a long day or setting the mood for a dinner with friends, we hope these tips help your favorites last just a little bit longer.
